Sarah Schoenfeld, currently artist in residence at the Villa Aurora, LA, shows a preview of her yet unfinished project “reloaded” she is working on here in California. It is 16mm footage shot during a WWII re-enactment near St. Barbara with an original field camera from the 1930s. Equipped with photo and film cameras from the time, she slips into the ambiguous role of a war reporter questioning the blurry boundary between the reality of a game of war and the virtual realm of an imagery that is a seemingly rigid deposit of historical proof and fictional reproduction. Felix Meyer will show three of his experimental, performative and conceptual video works in which simple gestures turn into magical and existential practices; a mixture of reflections on cinema, experimental film, philosophical dance, and the art of failure.

Ich habe eine Reise von Holland nach Schottland unternommen und die Route nachvollzogen, auf der mein Großvater im 2.Weltkrieg von der holländischen Westfront bis in schottische Kriegsgefangenschaft 1944-46 unterwegs war. Um zu begreifen, was in der Vergangenheit geschehen ist, stellt die Fotografie seit ihrer Erfindung eine Prothese dar. Fotografie verheißt den „objektiven“ Blick in die Vergangenheit und unterschlägt dabei, dass jegliche Geschichtsschreibung auch in Form von Fotografie Konstruktion ist und in jedem Fall subjektiv. Um diesen Glauben an die Fotografie zu hinterfragen, habe ich den Prozess des fotografischen Schauens in die Vergangenheit umgekehrt. Ich habe nicht das Fotoalbum meines Großvaters bemüht, sondern vor Ort seine Erzählung vor meinem inneren Auge imaginiert. Die Imagination, ein aktives Konstruieren, jedoch ist vielleicht der einzig mögliche Moment, der nahe an eine vergangene Realität reicht, da es sich nicht um ein Abbild handelt. Dieser Prozess jedoch bleibt unsichtbar.

Ich fotografierte an den Orten meine Imagination, das Unsichtbare. Daher ist das Loch im Bild, das Fehlen des Eigentlichen in dieser Arbeit das zentrale Motiv, um diese Unmöglichkeit der objektiv -fotografischen Rückschau zu verbildlichen. Dieses Fehlen kommt durch einen Fleck im Bild zum Ausdruck, der im Entwicklungsprozess durch ein Zuwenig an Licht ein Loch entstehen lässt, das in der Lichtführung der Landschaft nicht plausibel ist. Dieses Zuwenig im Bild ist für mich der fotografische Verweis.

Im Sinne der Romantik ist in diesem Fall die Landschaftsdarstellung kein Abbild der Natur, sondern sie vergegenwärtigt das „Unfassbare“, das Reale, oder wie man es nennen mag.

I made a journey from Holland to Scottland and took the same route as my grandfather did WWII, when he was involved in one of the biggest airborne mission „operation market garden“ which took place in september 1944 and was captured and brought as a POW to Scottland where he stayed until 1946. To understand what happened in the past, photography is an artificial limb from its invention in our society. Photography promises an „objective“ view in the past and makes us forget that history writing also in the form of photography is a construction and in every case subjective. To question the faith in photography i reversed the process of looking in the past through photography to the oposite. I did not ask the old photobook of my grandfather but imagined his story in my inner eye on the same place as he expienced all this. Imagination, an active construction is maybe the only possible moment, whis is coming close to a past reality, because its not a represtenation, but an active moment . But this process stays invisible and this is the main struggle.

I took fotos of my imagination, of the invisible. That is the reason for the whole in the picture, the missing is the main central point in this work, to represent the impossibility of an objective photographic review. The doubt in photography as a adequate medium to retell history. This missing is shown through a spot, which is made by dodge the photopaper, and have therefore less information in this area of the picture.

In the sense of romantic for me this kind of landscape image is not a representation of nature but realizes „the real“, or how ever you want to call it.
